It Takes Strength To Quit Your Dreams. Here’s Why That’s Okay.

I Made It To Everest Base Camp, But Many On The Trails Didn’t. Here’s What I Learnt From Them.

Recently I embarked upon the incredible trek up to the Himalayan gem, Everest Base Camp (EBC) in Nepal. I made it to the top, with my amazing parents who were in their seventies.

We were about 20% slower than some of the other groups hiking, with some days up to 14 hours hiking. But we made it! Our tour company said that only about 400 of the 60o guests per year make it all the way up there, and we were the oldest they’ve had up there ‘in a few years, at least’. It was nothing short of spectacular, challenging and – as cliché as it sounds – life changing.

Yet on the trek, I saw loads of people have to turn back and not get to the top.

As hard as it was to see, I respected their awareness that they knew their limitations. I thought it was commendable that they set goals, but in all honesty most of the turn backs hadn’t prepared properly.

I’m super fit but I still prepared for a good 100 days prior. It’s a different kind of fitness, lots of foot flexion and back strength to carry a pack. Also had to quit coffee.

Committing to EBC really is like every other goal I’ve prepared for. Always the first step in getting what I want is to decide what I want. Imagine how it’ll FEEL to get it…be it…live it. Know WHY I want it.

Little hills can feel like a mountain

You don’t have to climb to 5350 meters to climb your mountain. Metaphorically there are lots of little hills that might be just as hard for you to do.

Choose one thing that’s important to you, and commit to making it happen for 100 days. If it doesn’t give you the happiness, accomplishment or reward that you thought after 100 days, walk away from it.

Sometimes strength is not in ‘never quitting’ – it’s in knowing WHEN TO. Then finding peace with that decision.

One (good) day at a time

For me life is about lots of good days moving into more good days, and what defines ‘good’ for me is challenging myself every day to work towards my defined milestone.

I think one reason why EBC is so popular is because the end point is obviously defined! People need that. So be sure when you set your goals to set them with a clear end point. Otherwise you’re always climbing never really knowing when you’re at the top.

How to quit positively

If you need to quit, cool. Good on you for giving it a go. Don’t beat yourself up, it might not be YOU the failure, it’s the GOALS that failed. Setting goals that are actionable and achievable takes skill. Sometimes it takes a few tries to set the right goals.

It’s not how hard you hit. It’s how hard you can GET hit, and get up then do it all again.

So after quitting, take a few days of reflection…frustration…emptiness…. then come back stronger with a new goal that you want to try… for yes, you guessed right, a hundred days.

Now over to you!

This has been my process for over a decade and honestly you win some you lose some but at the end of it all, you know you’re a girl who went for it. That feels better than anything else.

What’s your mountain?

If you don’t know, perhaps take a few days to think about it and start your 100 days on Monday!! Monday’s a good day for that.

Post below and let me know what that big scary crazy goal is, and why you want it. Actually saying it out loud, or in this case, writing it publically, it’s the first step to turning what’s in your head into what’s out there for the universe to pick up.

Think it, see it, believe it.

Then do it.

Keep me posted on how you get on!
